Born August 31, 1925 to Mr. & Mrs. M.D. and Lillie Sequa, she was one of five girls born to this couple. They named her Vera who joined Essie, Mae Francis, Marie, and Ruby Dell as a sister with an everlasting love. As time passed, she became affectionately known throughout the African Methodist Episcopal Church as Mrs. Vera Dixon Sanders, a prominent fixture of the Tenth Episcopal District and the Northwest Texas Conference Lay Organization.
Mrs. Sanders was born and raised in Palmer, Texas where she united with the Edwards Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. At Edwards Chapel, she has served in various capacities throughout the years including but not limited to the Lay Organization, the Steward Board, the Stewardess Board, the Trustee Board, the Women’s Missionary Society, the Director of Young People’s Division, the Choir, and the Sunday School.
She also served as Treasurer for the Greater Fort Worth District Lay Organization and as the Benevolence Committee Chairperson.
Mrs. Vera married Mr. E.L. Sanders and together they had two children, Betty Sue and Buster Sanders. Unfortunately, both Mr. E.L. and Buster Sanders are now deceased.
In the community, Mrs. Sanders served as a member and Treasurer of the Essay Blair #276 Order of the Eastern Stars. She also serves as chairperson of the Benevolence Committee of the OES. She was a seamstress at Adbury’s of Dallas for over twenty-six years.
When asked how many General Conferences she has attended, she gave a hearty laugh and said: “Baby, I have been to so many until I have honestly forgotten how many. I went to the General Conference as a delegate for many, many years and have seen many Bishops and pastors come and go.”
When asked how many Biennials she has attended, she laughed again but returned the interview with, “I have been to sixteen Biennials.”
Mrs. Vera Dixon Sanders has served as President of her local Lay Organization. She served as Chaplain and Historiographer for the Greater Fort Worth District Lay Organization. She was one of the first recipients of the Northwest Texas Conference’s Trail Blazer Award for her active participation in the Lay Organization for many years. Mrs. Sanders has also been unanimously elected as Lay Person of the Year on several occasions and years. She was elected as a Lay Delegate to sixteen Connectional Lay Organization Biennials. She has also received many awards throughout her lifetime from civic, school, and religious entities.
