10th District Lay Organization Scholarship – 2024

Instructions
The 10th District Lay Organization will award a $1500.00 scholarship to a graduating high school senior who will be entering an institution of higher learning in the fall.
The purpose is to award a financial scholarship to a deserving student.
Eligibility Requirements
1. Member of a 10th District African Methodist Episcopal Church in good and regular standing.
2. Pursuing a course of study leading to a technical degree, an associate degree, or a bachelor’s degree.
NOTE: A PowerPoint presentation is available through the conference president to assist students with completing their applications. It will discuss the essential components of the application process.
Requirements:
1. The application must be typed.
2. Current high school transcript. A final transcript with the school’s official stamp or seal before the
awarding of the scholarship.
3. An essay not exceeding 600 words double-spaced on the Importance of a College education written in
the first person. In other words, why is a college education important to the applicant? What goals for
their future has the applicant identified?
4. Three letters of recommendation – one from a member of the AME church leadership (pastor, ministry
head, local Lay leader, etc.), one from a teacher or counselor at the student’s current high school who
can speak to the student’s involvement in academic and extracurricular activities, and the third can be
of the student’s choosing.
5. A Senior photo headshot for identification
6. A letter of acceptance from the college or school the student will be attending. A letter of intent will
be considered, but a letter of acceptance must be submitted and verified before the scholarship is
awarded.
7. All information must be submitted by July 10, 2024.
Selection
Only complete packets will be accepted and reviewed. Incomplete materials will not be returned to the applicant.
The scholarship winner will be announced at the Annual Conference, where the student is from. If the student cannot be present, a duly authorized person may receive the scholarship on the student’s behalf.
The scholarship will be paid to the school the student attends. If, for some reason, the student cannot attend, the money will be returned to the 10th District Lay Organization.
The scholarship committee will decide based on the quality of the documents and information received. Demonstrated leadership qualities in the church, school, and community will be reviewed.
The photo and all information submitted become the property of the 10th Episcopal District Lay Organization. The winner’s likeness may be used.
All decisions are final.
